Improvements in design and manufacturing of soft toric lenses over the past decade, coupled with the introduction of disposable and planned replacement options, have led to these lenses becoming an increasingly viable and popular fitting option. Yet the proportion of soft torics fitted fails to reflect the incidence of astigmatism among our contact lens wearers.

Around 45 per cent of prospective contact lens wearers show significant astigmatism of 0.75DC or more, the level at which soft toric lenses are usually considered.1 But prescribing data show that, in the UK, only 22 per cent of new, daily wear soft fits in 2005 were toric designs and in the US, only about 18 per cent of patients are prescribed soft toric lenses.2,3 Poor vision due to uncorrected astigmatism has also been shown to be a significant factor in contact lens discontinuation.4
