Eurolens Research data shows the dramatic growth in the use of SiHy contact lenses as more practitioners recommend these contact lens materials (Figure 1). The 2007 data shows that 28 per cent of new fits and 52 per cent of refits were in silicone hydrogels.

For astigmatic patients requiring a toric soft lens, the benefits of SiHy materials are even more pronounced. Toric lenses are thicker than their spherical equivalent due to designs intended to make the lenses rotationally more stable. This increase in thickness reduces the oxygen transmissibility of the lens and increases the possibility of corneal oxygen deficiency.
