Phakic intraocular lenses (PIOL) such as the Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens, STAAR Surgical, Monrovia, CA) can safely and efficiently treat greater amounts of correction, thus providing an elective alternative to Lasik and PRK without the risk of corneal ectasia (Figure 1).
