Athletes and their entourages from around the world converged on the Polyclinic located within the Athletes Village eager to be treated by some of the best clinicians Team GB had to offer.

Eye examinations and the provision of free spectacles (around 2,000 pairs) was, perhaps not surprisingly, the core activity carried out by a dedicated team of optometrists, contact lens (CL) practitioners and dispensing opticians who volunteered at least 10 days of their time as London 2012 Games Makers. This team was selected for their expertise in specialist clinics of one sort or another, with experience of chronic and acute eye conditions, unusual prescriptions and overseas vision aid projects (Figure 1).
