With charity Vision Aid Overseas facing some resistance to its new strategy from members, Optician decided to carry out a poll on one of the issues up for debate.
Prioritising permanent vision centres over temporary sites will also be on the agenda when charity members meet on September 11, but the provision of recycled spectacles is a more tangible issue.
The straw poll finds that 48 per cent of readers believe recycled spectacles are not worthwhile to developing countries, while 44 per cent said there are and the rest said they sometimes were.
This only serves to demonstrate the polarised opinions about recycled spectacles, which are either viewed as defunct cast-offs or life-changing donations. Some of VAO's financial backers are becoming fearful of being associated with the former, and recent studies suggest they might have a point.
