Background diabetic retinopathy (mild non-proliferative) & maculopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a multifocal disease of the retinal microvasculature and the clinical features are the result of multiple areas of focal abnormality in small retinal vessels.
Visual loss is usually because the fovea is involved. The small areas of focal disease combine with time to cause widespread abnormalities of the retina which may have major consequences including vitreous haemorrhage and retinal detachment
