Is there an alternative approach to loss leading eye care? Richard Llewellyn explores a way for independent practices to differentiate themselves from their competitors
There has been discussion in recent articles, letters columns and on internet forums about the diminishing size and viability of the independent sector of the UK optical scene.
In reality, the independent sector still accounts for about 50 per cent of the number of individual practices and around a third of the market by value. It is characterised by examples of some of the best primary eye care providers and the most innovative businesses. The loss of many independent practices over the past 20 years could be considered a normal part of the evolutionary process, where businesses that are relevant and evolving will thrive and those that are no longer suited to the populations they service will fade away.
