Traditional family opticians should use their history as a selling point but keep pace with new developments, Conlons managing director John Welsby tells Joe Ayling

The longstanding managing director of Conlons is among those celebrating the North West independents' 130th anniversary.

One of Welsby's memories of his career at Conlons, which began nearly 38 years ago, was helping to shoot the company's first ever television advert in 1985. Prior to this, marketing activity by the profession was not allowed.

'Opticians didn't see themselves as dispensers; we weren't allowed to advertise because it was a health thing not a spectacle thing. It completely opened the retail side of optics up so that it could be more transparent and competitive,' says Welsby.
