Soft lens materials
Conventional hydrogels
Soft contact lenses consist of two or more monomers polymerised together to form a copolymer. Copolymers are often referred to simply as 'polymers'. The concept of the 'washing line' is sometimes used to understand soft lens polymers. The washing line itself is a long polymer chain from which many hydrophilic groups (the 'wash') are suspended. At intervals the washing lines are fastened to each other by cross linkages. Cross linkages stop the material falling apart.
