Better cataract recovery

Bill Harvey finds out about a new study at Bradford University with the aim of improving refractive management after cataract extraction – and which you can help to support

At a time when some CCGs are relegating cataract extraction as a non-urgent procedure, it is worrying that some studies show having the procedure may not result in the reduction in falls and improved visual environment that might be expected. Optometrist Emily Charlesworth has designed a study to see if this is due to challenges from offering the best post-operative refractive correction, especially after just one eye has been treated. I recently caught up with Emily to find out more.

The Challenge

So, what does the study hope to achieve? ‘The aim of the project is to find out about patients’ spectacle use post cataract surgery, particularly in the interim period between first and second eye surgery, as anisometropia will be induced for many patients following surgery. Current aftercare advice recommends obtaining new spectacles some four to six weeks after surgery. However, many patients wait until after second eye surgery before obtaining new spectacles.’
