Is there a requirement for one peer review in the three-year cycle or is this one per year?

For the three-year 36-point GOC requirement for optometrists, at least one point should be obtained in 'peer discussion activity involving patient records and decision making'. Contact lens opticians also need to obtain one of these points as a minimum, again relating to patient records and decision making, but in a contact lens themed session. Similarly, independent prescribing optometrists must take part in a therapeutically themed discussion. My personal view is that peer to peer is an excellent way to discuss views and that the minimum of one point per three-year cycle should not prove to be the problem many have stated it would be. (Remember that you will receive three points after attending such an event and uploading your reflective statement.) Don't forget, there is no requirement for dispensing opticians to attend such events, but attendance is encouraged. I have spoken to a number of DOs who have contributed to such meetings already and found the experience valuable.
