Although CLE is a very safe and efficacious treatment, it is generally reserved for those patients who are unsuitable for less invasive (usually laser) refractive treatments. The operation is fairly familiar as it is equivalent to a cataract operation. The principle differences are that the surgery is a purely elective procedure to benefit the patient's lifestyle and is performed in the absence of cataract. As there is no cataract, the softer lens will be mainly aspirated rather that requiring full phacoemulsification. The high refractive errors associated with this procedure mean that the surgeon will usually have to operate on exceptionally large or small eyes.
