Contact lenses: Products for myopia

Optician rounds up the contact lenses available to UK practitioners for the management of myopia

Scotlens: Nocturnal

Scotlens highlighted its Nocturnal contact lenses, which it offers alongside training to help practitioners develop skills and introduce orthokeratology in practice.

The company said providing specialty lenses has never been so valuable to practices and it can help develop a profitable patient base that provides a regular direct debit revenue.

Nocturnal is suitable for use with all topographers and provides correction up to -5.00 for BVS and myopia patients, as well as -1.50DC for astigmatism. Enhanced correction is possible for higher prescriptions, such as post-Lasik.

Scotlens also noted its distance centre multifocal range, Procurve, which it said can also provide an option for progressing myopes because of the peripheral image shell produced.

CooperVision: MiSight 1 day

CooperVision highlighted MiSight 1day – its CE-marked soft daily disposable contact lens that is designed to slow the progression of myopia in children.

The company noted that MiSight is the only contact lens to have five years of clinical data from trials involving children.

It is designed for children from the first onset of myopia and available with a prescription from -0.25D to -6.00D.

CooperVision’s ActivControl technology controls axial elongation and myopia progression while fully correcting refractive error. The contact lens’ two treatment zones create myopic defocus with an image focused in front of the retina, rather than behind it, while two correction zones correct myopia in all gaze positions.

The contact lens company said that its clinical research found that children who started wearing MiSight later in the study progressed at the same rate after switching as those who commenced the treatment three years earlier.

It said that no other study has offered conclusive data for such a high degree of continued efficacy in myopia management using a one-day soft contact lens over five years.

No7 Contact Lenses: EyeDream

No7 highlighted its EyeDream orthokeratology contact lens, which has more than 30,000 wearers since its launch in 2004 and is available in over 350 certified locations.

Practitioners are supported with CET accredited EyeDream workshops that are led by professional services director at No7, Katie Harrop, as well its technical support team.

EyeDream uses topographical data for patient fitting, which is managed through a desktop app. The software is designed to enhance the patient and practitioner experience and achieve successful outcomes.

Mark’ennovy: Mylo

Mark’ennovy and the Brien Holden Vision Institute (BHVI)’s soft contact lens Mylo is designed for practitioners who want to offer myopia management options to patients.

The silicone hydrogel lens features BHVI’s extended depth of focus technology, which slows myopia progression and provides comfort to the wearer with a DK value of 60.

Mylo is a monthly disposable lens that features a high water content of 75% and a low coefficient of friction. It has low elastic modulus to ensure a good fit and easy handling for young wearers.

It is available in a range of diameters (13.5 to 15.5) and base curves (6.5 to 9.8) with spherical powers up to -15.00 in 0.25 steps.

Visioneering Technologies Inc: NaturalVue

Visioneering Technologies Inc’s NaturalVue 1day multifocal contact lens is CE-approved for the management of myopia and presbyopia correction and uses patented centre distance optics.

Distributed in the UK by Positive Impact, the lens is designed to create a virtual pinhole leading to an extended depth of focus.

Powers of the daily disposable contact lens range from +4.00D to -12.25D and is available in 0.25D steps.

A clinical study of NaturalVue that involved 141 children found a significant reduction in the progression of refractive error change and a reduction in axial length change.

Marketing and professional services director at Positive Impact, Nick Atkins, said: ‘Myopia management is the next frontier for optometry. We now know that myopic children don’t have to become just another statistic for high myopia with the inherent risk of pathology that brings. It is exciting to be at the forefront of a new approach to managing myopia and to improve patient outcomes.’

Menicon: Bloom

Menicon’s Bloom range of contact lenses for myopia management will be supported with a range of online tools that will launch later this year.

Its lenses are designed for children who have shown signs of myopia progression with patients required to wear the lenses until adulthood or until progression has stopped, the company said.

Bloom Night is a CE-approved orthokeratology lens that is manufactured from a hyper-oxygen permeable rigid material in order to ensure comfort for the wearer. Menicon’s Bloom Day is an extended depth of focus daily disposable soft contact lens. The company added that patients would not be prescribed Night and Day together. Bloom Care is designed for use with Night to ensure effective cleaning.

Menicon’s guidance for practitioners includes e-learning modules as well as follow-up schedules and consent documents. A two-part monitoring system is also available to ensure patient compliance and help practitioners track progress. Its Easyfit software guides practitioners through the fitting process and its Virtual Doctor app aids communication with patients.

Kevin Mitchell, managing director of Menicon UK, said: ‘We believe the increasing levels of myopia in children across the globe requires a comprehensive and educated response and we have identified this as a major initiative for the UK.’
