Next week, Optician will be running a number of features looking at developments in practice likely to become familiar post-pandemic. One new piece of equipment aimed at eye care practice is a portable air filtration system, the Toul Operio Mobile (figure 1), which claims to filter out 99.995% of all particles and lint that potentially carry bacteria or viruses. The system should be effective in minimising local transmission in clinics.

In recent weeks we have reported the evidence, initially mostly anecdotal, suggesting that loss of smell (anosmia) is an important symptom associated with Covid-19. Indeed, recent papers1 have implied that anosmia and ageusia (loss of taste) may represent the first, or in mild cases the only, manifest symptom.
