Interest in the Centre within Ireland, as a major research centre attracting significant funding and offers of research collaboration, was emphasised by the grand opening in March this year by the Irish Taoiseach, Enda Kenny. The prime minister, as part of the ceremony, underwent an eye examination under the careful watch of MPRG principal investigator Dr John Nolan and MPRG director, consultant ophthalmologist Professor Stephen Beatty.

When I caught up with Dr Nolan he was as energised as ever, having just had another paper accepted for publication, this time by the British Journal of Nutrition, another major journal to add to the roster. Dr Nolan has even had a feature about him published in Nature, though is humble enough to remind me that his first ever published work was in Optician some years ago.
