The first speaker was, appropriately enough, Nolan himself who, after welcoming all to the hallowed Cambridge location of Downing College (Figure 1) gave a useful summary of current thinking regarding nutrient intake that impacts on ocular function. Most readers are now more than familiar with the fact that there are a group of substances found in the body, most of which are not synthesised by it but, instead, are totally of dietary origin. These have useful properties which appear to help the health of the eye and this was expanded upon in more detail as the day went on.
