In fact, although eye examinations were down 7 per cent from last month, and last year also, the average decline over the past 12 months was negligible. NHS tests have increased their share by 5 per cent over the year, primarily due to free eye examinations in Scotland.

Single-vision dispensing was down by 2 per cent over the year, down 6 per cent from April and down 6 per cent from May 2006. Bifocal lenses continued to decline by volume, down 6 per cent, on average, over the last 12 months. They now account for just 11.7 per cent of all dispensing, compared to 12.8 per cent last May.
