Turners Optometrists presents a case study of a difficult 20D astigmatism correction handled by dispensing optician Arran Taylor and Norville Optical
Every now and then an unusual prescription crops up and increasingly it is difficult to get the 'one-off special' lens made in an acceptable form.
This occurred in late 2006 at Turners Optometrists in Bridgwater, Somerset, when a longstanding patient turned up for her next examination.
I had been seeing the patient for a couple of decades, and her most recent prescription turned out to be:
R +15.00 / -20.00 x 80
L +12.00 / -16.00 x 105
And to make matters more complicated she needed a +4.00 add to be able to see the cards for her favourite pastime - bingo.
The problem of dispensing this prescription was passed over to one of the practice's dispensing opticians, Arran Taylor, who discussed this with Norville Optical which bravely agreed to have a go and produce these lenses.
After some difficulty and using its great expertise, Norville managed to produce the most exceptional looking pair of reading lenses to the above prescription and as the photographs show, the patient is delighted with the result.
Norville chief executive Frank Norville said: 'I have to say it myself, it looked a very neat job when glazed, so much so you would have never have guessed it was the same as the prescription. We can only hope the patient thought likewise.'
Optometrist Richard Llewellyn commented: 'I am delighted that Norvilles still has the expertise to be able to generate these lenses and it is a great credit to them that the lenses look so good and perform perfectly.
'Our patient is delighted and these new spectacles have given her back her enjoyment at bingo and her classes at College. Thanks to everyone at Norvilles who made this possible.'
