Optician’s ‘Other People’s Practice from the mid-1960s is the focus for this week’s Echoes of the Past.

In the January 29 issue from 1965, it was the turn of Gordon Turner in Cheam, Surrey, to be featured in the series, which looked at the history and evolution of practices. Its location, Cheam – where the practice still resides, was described in the article as a ‘rather sedate, residential suburb, one of the bastions of commuterland which surrounds the important local shopping area of Sutton.’ A view still applicable today.

The former cottage was purchased in a derelict state before a full conversion – with a waiting room created with an extension and a residential flat on the first floor. The practice’s décor was modern and through the use of Panama pine paneling, was described as ‘handsome.’
