European focus in Manchester

Bill Harvey looks forward to a major biennial conference which, this year, is to be hosted in the UK

At last, eye care is increasingly recognised as embracing a range of skills and disciplines. The days when ‘low vision’ was considered a specialised subject area, distinct from optometry and optics in general are long gone. Instead, there has been a major increase in multidisciplinary activity and a whole host of scientists and clinicians of various backgrounds are now involved in the assessment and management of vision loss. Optometrists and opticians, however, remain at the centre of this world. So, it seems worth flagging up a major event soon to hit Manchester. The biennial conference of the European Society for Low-Vision Research and Rehabilitation is to take place in the city in mid-September and will be an opportunity for all UK practitioners to be able to hear, perhaps meet, some of the big guns in eye research and clinical practice.
