Rarely a day goes by without news stories concerned with the restrictions upon future NHS funding. The changing UK demographic along with better screening and management mean a fully-funded NHS is unlikely to cope with demand and efficiency savings need to be made. Increasing the provision of primary care in the community is one approach, along with better use of allied health professionals to support the medical team.
The Excellence in Ophthalmology conference has, for three years now, been a useful meeting point for the many varied professionals to discuss options relating to co-management and a multidisciplinary approach. Furthermore, the competition that is run as part of the meeting to reward people instrumental in setting up schemes that provide better use of resources has been very effective in encouraging things to move forward. This allows people to hear what might have worked in one area and might be appropriate to use in another.
