Fitting myopia management into life

With myopia management moved into core College of Optometrist guidance, Elizabeth Lumb and Indie Grewal examine the viewpoints of a practitioner and a family member involved in a child’s myopia journey

I would like to introduce you to Maddy. She is my 12-year-old niece. The youngest sibling of a family of three children, Maddy is a dancer, a Tik-Tok content creator, a cheerleader and a myope.  

Somehow, despite their misfortune of belonging to two myopic parents, my own fully grown children have seemingly dodged myopia, so it was somewhat of a surprise, when through a WhatsApp message, my sister proudly shared a photo of eight-year-old Maddy excitedly wearing her brand-new spectacles. 

Maddy’s excitement was matched by my sense of doom as I asked to see a copy of the prescription, knowing that the odds were likely to show a myopic prescription.
