Three steps to qualification

As discussed in the first two parts, Level 1 or 'entry level' exemptions to the Medicines Act mean that some prescription-only medicines (POMs) are available to all registered optometrists without further training, although the College of Optometrists' guidance requires all those using or supplying therapeutic drugs to maintain their competency to do so. To gain access to a wider range of POMs and set up prescribing partnerships with independent prescribers, an additional qualification is required. The three steps to gaining either AS or SP optometrist status are outlined in Figure 1.
