Statutory legislation relating to therapeutic practice
There are two primary divisions in British law: statutory law and civil law. Strictly speaking, a ‘statute’ is an Act of Parliament. Statutory law relevant to therapeutic practice includes primary legislation such as the Opticians Act (1989) and the Medicines Act (1968). Amending legislation that occurs subsidiary to primary legislation takes the form of Statutory Instruments (SIs) and constitutes ‘secondary’ legislation (Table 1).
