Growth in the online spectacle market continues apace. Should practitioners see the internet as a serious threat or an opportunity? Optician reports

InternetSince internet retailers began selling glazed spectacles to British consumers in 2004, the online frame market in the UK has evolved to encompass a wide variety of offerings and is estimated to account for as much as 3-4 per cent of the entire UK market.

A search on Google indicates that many new online retailers have entered the market since 2004 bringing a variety of different business models with them. A quick search on Google uncovers dozens of retailers selling a huge choice of optical frames and sunglasses from a large number of manufacturers.

The lower overheads associated with internet retailing means prices online are frequently lower than in high street practices. For instance, the lowest priced pair of glazed frames available in the UK, from SelectSpecs.com (News 23.10.09), includes UV protection as well as anti-reflection and scratch-resistant coatings and delivery for £8.50. Another company, SpecsPost.co.uk, promotes its products through franchises and partnerships (News 07.05.10), while Irisoptical.co.uk has aligned its internet offering with several 'bricks and mortar' stores where customers can bring their prescriptions to receive glazed eyewear.
