Paul Checkley, clinical director at Harley Street Hearing, was one of the first practitioners to offer the Lyric in the UK market and highlights one of the stigmas: 'With an ageing population, we are seeing an increasing number of patients in their 50s and 60s who want to sharpen their hearing, but don't want to draw attention to a problem which is typically associated with ageing,' he says.
Unlike other hearing devices on the market, the Lyric is inserted just 4mm from the eardrum to provide what the manufacturer described as exceptionally natural sound quality and a clean, undistorted signal. 'The natural movement of the pinna provides good directional hearing, natural amplification of high frequencies and reduced ambient noises and wind noise,' says a Phonak spokesperson. Other claimed benefits include little or no occlusion, reduced feedback and feedback-free use of earphones, telephones and stethoscopes.
