Enfield Eye Care won a new category in the Optician Awards for 2006 entitled the ‘Healthy Sight Practice of the Year’. The award was created by Transitions to seek out a practice that demonstrated an holistic approach to eye care. Chris Bennett reports

Holistic eye care is often discussed but rarely practised, so when judging this award the panel looked for practices that demonstrated a commitment to eye care in its widest sense. This was assessed by examining how far candidates went beyond the eye examination when dealing with patients. A great emphasis was also put on communication of eye care messages.

enfieldeyecare.jpgThe first ever winner of the healthy sight category was Enfield Eye Care, a modestly sized practice established in 1981. Located on London Road, Enfield Town, the practice is staffed by one full-time optometrist and two part-time reception staff. The practice has a broadly mixed patient data base of around 5,000 – around 25 per cent are NHS patients, and 40 per cent are over 50 years of age.
