In focus: Specsavers pushes multimillion pound OCT rollout

A huge investment by Specsavers and its partners will see optical coherence tomography (OCT) rolled out across 705 more UK practices as the multiple continues shifting towards extended clinical services. Joe Ayling reports

An OCT rollout across all 740 Specsavers stores was announced by the multiple this week but the full details of this mega deal have yet to emerge.

Specsavers nationwide rollout would begin next month and be completed within two years, the company said. Around 35 Specsavers practices already offered OCT.

However, the multiple did not disclose to Optician who would be supplying the OCTs, or even which model would be installed across its network, but the likelihood is a contract, or contracts, of this scale was hard fought.

A supporting image this week of an elderly patient being scanned using a Nidek OCT in a Midlands Specsavers should not lead to assumptions, a spokesperson said. After all, a Topcon 3D OCT Maestro 2000 has been installed at Specsavers’ clinically-led practice in Newport, Wales.
