Few can be better placed to lead optometrists into the ‘new world’ of commissioning than clinician, researcher and commissioner David Parkins. Joe Ayling interviews the new president of the College of Optometrists

When David Parkins stepped into the role of College president earlier in the year (News 21.03.14) he was armed with experience from both high street and health board environments.

He is the clinical quality lead on the Bexley Clinical Commissioning Cabinet, chair of the 111 programme board for NHS South East London, optometric adviser for NHS Diabetic Eye Screening in Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich and also works in independent and hospital practice.

In addition, Parkins is currently conducting doctoral research into the clinical decision making and referral practice of UK optometrists.

He first joined the College in 2004, and his knowledge of commissioning is a particular asset to the profession amid NHS reforms and its Call to Action for Eye Health (see this week’s news). He wants the profession to gather evidence of how it can step up to improve healthcare.
