A 64-year-old retired male with type 1 diabetes and severe myopic degeneration, presented with a spectacle prescription of RE -20.00DS (6/19+1) and LE -19.00DS (6/19+1) with an addition of +2.00DS N5 for reading. The patient’s back vertex distance was 11mm, and the ‘K’s were recorded as RE 7.64 x 95/7.69 x 5 and LE 7.69 spherical.
Shifting needs
Prior to 2006 the patient had been successfully wearing CooperVision’s long established Lunelle ES70 contact lenses, with a prescription of RE 8.30/13.00/ -15.50 (6/15) and LE 8.30/13.00/-17.00 (6/15). However, despite holding a valid driving licence, his level of vision was not at the required level for driving and he relied on his wife to fulfil this role. Unfortunately the patient’s wife became ill and was no longer able to drive, which meant that a solution needed to be found to allow him to meet the driving requirement. This was a serious concern as the patient had limited access to public transport.
