National Optical Committee reviews the Call To Action and ponders leadership for LOCs in the future

This year’s National Optical Conference was dominated by the announcement of the NHS’s five year plan and the recent Call to Action exercise. Chris Bennett reports.

Utilising optometrists’ skills and harnessing them in the community to deliver care where it is needed and reduce the burden on secondary care has long been the goal of the profession. This year that objective was all the more prescient coinciding as it did the NHS’s five year plan. This sees the cost constraints the NHS faces being eased by moving care out of hospitals and into the community.

Designing the systems that can deliver the care and savings required have resulted in the Call To Action process for pharmacy, dentistry and General Practitioners. Optics has recently undergone its own Call To Action and the first Day of the NOC was dedicated to some early findings.
