Maintaining patients in successful contact lens wear and minimising dropout has long been the goal for eye care practitioners and for the contact lens industry. But there is growing recognition that first experiences of contact lenses are crucial to long-term success.

A UK study of new contact lens wearers found that, of those who drop out, one in four do so during the first month of lens wear and nearly half within two months.1

Yet little is known about patients’ motivation and experience in the very earliest stages of trying contact lenses, before they go on to purchase. Anecdotal feedback suggests that as many as half of those who start a contact lens trial will fail.2
