It was less than a year ago (see news 10.12.10) that Optician first broke the news that Plymouth had plans for a new UK optometry course and at that stage officials were still denying a new course was on the cards. Amazingly, in less than nine months the course has been designed, a faculty recruited, students admitted and teaching started.

Simo, the woman charged with heading the course, qualified and practised in her native Spain and then in the UK before gaining her PhD in Manchester. After three and half years at the Dublin Institute of Technology a planned year in Mozambique was interrupted when the Plymouth opportunity arose and brought her back to the UK. What attracted her to the role was the more practical and relationship-focused approach the course is designed to have. This has been an emphasis which has generated a lot of the interest and excitement around the degree.
