Many practice owners are put off by the high costs of purchasing an optical coherence tomographer (OCT), stating that they do not believe that having such expensive equipment can ever pay for itself let alone prove profitable. Even before I purchased my OCT my opinion was that having this piece of kit was a no-brainer from the clinical perspective. However, I wanted to ensure I had a distinct plan for making the equipment not only viable but also profitable in my practice.
Business considerations
For anyone considering adding OCT technology to their practice I would advise them to consider the business aspects as well as the clinical aspects before their purchase. For example, does the price include extra features as standard or are they paid-for add-ons (such as an anterior segment module or fundus autofluorescence) and how will these be of benefit to you?
