
Soft skills or communication skills are key to being able to work successfully in an optical environment, where good patient handling skills are essential. Many employers have said to me: ‘I can teach new staff about optics, but they need to have the right attitude with patients.’
This article will look at identifying some of the barriers to communication, why careful consideration of language is important as well as tone and intonation. Being aware of body language particularly facial expression and always making eye contact with patients during conversations or discussions. Also, part of good communication skills is being able to ask questions effectively and always actively listening when a patient is speaking.
