Q&A: Claire Ranger, Hammond and Dummer Opticians

Business
The managing director at Milton Keynes-based independent Hammond and Dummer Opticians talks tech

How do you assess before deciding to invest in an emerging technology or piece of equipment?

Claire Ranger I’m always open to new ideas, but will only purchase something that has been tried and proven to help. We read Optician magazine, go to Independents Day, talk to peers and reps. There is a vast wealth of knowledge out there.

Meanwhile, financially speaking, all practices are different. It depends on the De-Minimis tax rule and tax positions; your accountant is the best person to consult.

What equipment have you acquired for H&D and how have these acquisitions changed the services you can offer?

CR I couldn’t go back and work without the equipment we have now. The most recent acquisition has been the keratograph (pictured), which has allowed us to carry out OrthoK and myopia control. The staff love the fact that we can now fit OrthoK lenses. It’s a great practice booster too, as these people talk about it.
