Traditionally, most methods of retinal examination employ direct or indirect ophthalmoscopy viewing techniques to observe the fundus, from which practitioners note any relevant clinical findings. While this provides an overview of retinal integrity, it does not serve as an objective record of the posterior pole.

The development of fundus camera technology has enabled 'visual records' of the ophthalmoscopic appearance of the patient's retina to be documented rapidly and accurately at the time of examination. The resulting images permit detailed evaluation of subtle retinal features, without the patient incurring discomfort under the bright light intensity of conventional observation systems.
