Review: The Adaptica refraction unit

A newly launched Adaptica refraction unit includes the first commercial application of adaptive optics for optometrists. Bill Harvey gauges its effectiveness

FIGURE-1I have always been a fan of electronic phoropters. Apart from the expectation of patients for the latest technology, the ability to rapidly compare lenses makes for a more efficient assessment and ensures better subjective responses. Previous correction can be compared instantaneously with any new prescription findings; comparison lenses during the refraction can be presented speedily but systematically; small axis changes of cylinder are easier to demonstrate; and data recording and transfer to other instruments or datasets is simple.

Italian instrument company Adaptica (a commercial spin-off of the University of Padua) launched its  VisionFit at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons congress in September. The small-scale design of the wearable refraction system, along with the knowledge that it includes a fully adaptable fluid lens, is intriguing so I managed to arrange a viewing ahead of an official UK launch.
