Scotland’s specialist eye care service

Greg Middleton describes a Scottish hospital offering eye care services across the range, and the only one yet to include the iStent procedure among them

Set within BMI Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow – Scotland’s largest private hospital – Eye Care Scotland is a dedicated and fully comprehensive service for eye health and eye surgery. Through its multi-skilled team of 14 consultant ophthalmologists, over 10 ophthalmic sub-specialties are covered, providing more than 30 different surgeries and treatments.

All of our consultant ophthalmologists are highly experienced in the full spectrum of eye health issues and are supported by dedicated ophthalmic nurses, practitioners, optometrists and orthoptists, meaning our patients are given a personalised care programme from their initial consultation through to the completion of their treatment.

Situated within BMI Ross Hall Hospital, the dedicated facility consists of two ophthalmic operating theatres (including a full laser suite), three consulting rooms, recovery area and is fully equipped with modern diagnostic and surgical technology to provide a high-quality service for the discerning patient (figures 1 and 2).

Our range of services provided include:

  • Cataract surgery (standard, advanced and laser assisted)
  • Corneal cross linking and transplants
  • Paediatric services (strabismus surgery, orthoptic assessment and treatment)
  • Eyelid treatments and surgery
  • Glaucoma services (monitoring and surgeries including SLT and iStent inject)
  • Medical retina conditions
  • Vitreo-retinal services (vitrectomies and floaterectomies)
  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Laser vision correction
  • Refractive lens exchange
  • Implantable contact lenses

Our comprehensive range of eye health treatments and surgeries bring something unique to the Scottish market by providing patients with a consultant-led pathway from start to finish, all within a hospital setting, where patient care and safety is paramount.

Cataracts and premium lens options

We provide a range of options for cataract patients using different surgical techniques and lens options, providing them with a personalised treatment plan to get the best possible outcome.

Our lens options are:

  • Monofocal – can be used to correct distance vision, or both near and distance by using a mono-vision technique.
  • Multifocal – giving correction for both distance and near vision in order to achieve spectacle independence. Multifocal correction can be achieved through the use of multifocal, trifocal and accommodating IOLs dependent on the patient’s suitability and needs.
  • Toric – used to neutralise astigmatism and are available in monofocal and multifocal options.

We also provide laser assisted cataract surgery, where the procedure is carried out using a femtosecond laser, giving the consultant a higher degree of precision and the patient a more customised treatment plan.

Micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (iStent Inject)

We are very proud to be the only private provider in Scotland of the iStent Inject – the 2nd generation iStent device which provides optimum results in producing eye pressure levels and is designed to restore the eye’s natural ability to drain fluid in the eye.

Figure 2: Surgical theatre

iStent Inject works like the stents used to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Its small size is clearly shown in figure 3.

When vessels get clogged, a stent opens them up to increase the flow of fluid. While iStent Inject is a highly innovative technology, how it works is very simple:

  • iStent Inject is designed to create a permanent channel through the primary blockage site (trabecular meshwork) to restore the eye’s natural outflow.
  • Restoring this natural outflow can lower and control pressure within the eye.

The iStent Inject can be implanted as a single procedure or as an additional procedure to cataract surgery and aims to reduce or eliminate the patient’s need for glaucoma medication.

For glaucoma patients with lower pressure level issues, our Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty works to stimulate drainage tissue and improve drainage. It treats specific cells ‘selectively’ and can be used as the primary treatment or alongside eye drops to lower eye pressure levels.

Corneal collagen cross-linking and transplants

Our consultants who sub-specialise in corneal conditions are fellowship trained in corneal surgery and have extensive experience in corneal treatments.

Our latest corneal service, collagen cross-linking, is a technique which uses UV light and a photosensitiser to strengthen chemical bonds in the cornea. The goal of the treatment is to stop progressive and irregular changes in the corneal shape known as ectasia. These changes are typically marked by corneal thinning and often lead to high levels of myopia and astigmatism. We can also provide corneal transplant surgery, still needed in advanced disease.

Refractive services

At Eye Care Scotland we have a dedicated refractive suite that provides procedures such as laser eye surgery, refractive lens exchange and implantable contact lenses, for any patients you may see who enquire about these services. Unlike other high street providers, our procedures are carried out within a hospital environment and are fully consultant-led pathways. We offer free diagnostic consultations for anyone considering their options.
