Many optometrists encounter patients who suffer from the emotional trauma of sight loss, and often are in the 'front-line' when dealing with patients who have recently received a devastating diagnosis.
How positive then, for the profession to see an optometrist, Anita Morrison-Fokken, introduce a conference organised with the sole aim to establish a network to address these issues. Speaking on behalf of a multi-agency group, Morrison-Fokken began by announcing this was to be no ordinary conference, and reminded delegates of their responsibility in ensuring the emotional support needs of visually impaired people were acknowledged. Illustrating the extent of the problem, she noted that preliminary research conducted on behalf of the group had shown only 22 per cent of organisations offered a formal counselling service. Most - 52 per cent - offered no service at all.
