The usually static spectacles market has been going through some exciting times. Simone Blake reviews a short-term increase in the value of the market and also transactions up to March.

The spectacles market is one that has remained relatively static in volume and value terms over the last four years.

However, a short-term increase in both transactions - 8.9 million units in 2006 - and value - £1,174m in 2006 - has occurred. Transactions and value have increased by 4 and 5 per cent respectively from March 2005 to March 2006.

The increased value of this market has been driven not only by a growth in transactions, but also by a slight rise in average spectacle price.
