Store design: Wilkinson's Opticians refitted, refurbed, regenerated

Wilkinsons Opticians in Tonbridge used to feel cramped and outdated. But after four months’ building work the practice is now a beacon of modern optics retail design. Saul Sebag visited for the relaunch

Wilkinsons Opticians held a grand opening of its revamped Tonbridge practice on February 10. The event was the culmination of three years’ work that has seen the practice completely transformed and modernised.

‘Fifteen years had passed since the last refit and time was taking its toll, says Jamie Edney, co-director at Wilkinsons Opticians. ‘The outdated facilities were beginning to fail and there was a desire to make the practice environment consistent with the quality of products we sell. We had to make a decision on whether to just replace the furnishings or do something more ambitious. We decided on the latter as we recognised that Tonbridge was regenerating. So, in order to improve our consulting rooms, clinical waiting area and our retail area a two-storey expansion was planned.’
