The optical categories tracked by GfK have all grown their sales value significantly over this period. The sales value of contact lenses is up in Q2 2013 by 5.3 per cent as compared to Q2 2012. The value of contact lens care products meanwhile is up 3.3 per cent, slightly behind the growth rate of contact lenses as a greater proportion of wearers opt for daily lenses. Spectacle frames have grown their value in Q2 2013 by 8.5 per cent, benefiting from both increasing volumes and an increasing average price per frame. Sunglasses, however, have been the stand-out performer, growing sales value in the quarter by +32.4 per cent to reach a total quarterly sales value of £46m. This high growth rate was fuelled by significantly better weather in both April and June 2013 than in the equivalent months in 2012, which had dampened sales in the previous year.
