At that time, laser refractive surgery was already established as a successor to earlier techniques such as radial keratotomy. It was in 1989 that ophthalmologist David Gartry, a former optometrist, became the first surgeon in the UK to perform an excimer laser procedure. The first commercial clinic, at the Clatterbridge Hospital on the Wirral, carried out its first treatments in January 1991.
