
It’s natural for students and new recruits, regardless of their profession, to feel optimistic about the future, fresh from their studies, ambitious and ready for action. Optics is no exception and with the challenges of an ageing population, advancing technology and the potential for greater collaboration with secondary care, there is much to be gained for practitioners and patients.
Zak Saleem, a final year optometry student at the University of Plymouth, believes the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and evolving technologies is set to ‘revolutionise’ the optical profession. ‘AI can enhance the accuracy of diagnoses, particularly in retinal imaging and the detection of disease, through the analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans and fundus photography. This allows earlier detection of conditions, which hopefully means we can prevent severe sight loss.’
