Town for the blind

Anita Morrison-Fokken looks at how services for the visually impaired are offered in Germany

Marburg is an old university town in the German state of Hessen. The historical part of the town is built on hills overlooking the river Lahn and is crowned by a 13th century castle. Although steeped in history, Marburg is also famous for its forward thinking services to the blind and partially sighted, mainly thanks to the work of the Blista, and is often described as the 'Stadt der Blinden' - the town for the blind.

Blista is an abbreviation for a wonderful compound German noun: die Blindenstudienanstalt, which, literally translated, means 'College for the Blind'. This however belies the extensive range of services delivered by this organisation. This article will provide an overview of these, as well as comparative information about certification criteria and benefits in Germany and the UK.
