Until presbyopia strikes it's very difficult to appreciate the impact it has on your everyday life. Perhaps typically of an early presbyope, I managed to cope with deteriorating near vision either by taking my spectacles off when faced with small print, holding things at arm's length or finding the brightest spot in the room. I have never worn progressive spectacle lenses.

A recent train journey to London on a rainy day to visit the theatre proved to be my small print moment. Faced with poor light and a jiggling train I simply couldn't read the newspaper. Once inside the theatre I couldn't read the programme, I realised I was in denial.
