Turnover and eye examinations

Total practice turnover improved by less than 1 per cent on last month to 163 Index points, which is 7 per cent lower than August 2011.

Turnover per eye examination is down by £2 on last month to £150 and this is £4 lower than August last year.

The number of eye examinations during August increased by 2 per cent on July to 102 Index points, which is 4 per cent lower than August 2011.

Figure 1 shows total turnover plotted against the total number of eye examinations. The linear trend for total turnover is flat over this two-year period and the number of eye examinations shows a slight upward trend. The annual growth in the number of eye examinations is 1.75 per cent, reflecting the increase in the UK population, the gradual ageing process and the efforts of the optical industry to promote the need for regular eye exams. The UK retail optical business is working harder but failing to convert this to an increase in revenue at a time when costs are increasing.
