Industry data show that growth in the number of contact lens wearers in the UK has slowed over the past two years. Although the latest figures show a small increase in wearers in 2008, the monthly Optician Index suggests new contact lens fits were down on the previous year.

There are anecdotal reports that optical practitioners have little incentive to fit contact lenses, do not view them as profitable and are concerned about losing sales to the internet, especially in the current economic climate. At present there is no formal route for optometrists to register a speciality in contact lenses, as there is for dispensing opticians to become contact lens opticians, and undergraduate students have limited experience of contact lens fitting during their studies.
