Young Practice of the Year: How Eyeworks took the top prize

Despite a challenging economic environment in the past five years continued ambition in the independent sector meant Young Practice of the Year 2014 was a well-contested category won by a unique business certain of its target consumer. Joe Ayling reports

While this wasn’t quite the Oscar optometrist Brenda McKernan can loosely lay claim to her Eyeworks, London practice took centre stage at the Optician Awards this year.

Winning the Young Practice of the Year award and shortlisted for Fashion Practice of the Year, McKernan was rewarded for her efforts since starting up the London practice in 2010.

She said: ‘I was really hoping we were going to win because I knew we were doing something a bit different.’

Indeed, its chilled-out practice playlist, free-flowing espresso coffees, custom artwork, novelty chocolate eyeballs and colourful frame displays accompanied by handwritten notes all go some way towards differentiating Eyeworks London from a typical optical practice.
